Fifth Gear pits Ford Focus RS vs. Mitsubishi Evo X

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Here’s another clip of the UK television show that features not just one enthusiast car – but two cars, Ford’s stonking new Focus RS and the Mitsubishi Evolution X. Better still, the fearsome twosome tangle on the track in a pair of tests with hot shoes Tiff Needell and BTCC champion Jason Plato at the wheel.

It’s a scrap as the touring car scion takes on the rally-bred hero, so check out the front-drive versus all-wheel-drive pocket rocket madness

Mitsubishi Evolution FQ-330 SST (Euro-only)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

In keeping with Mitsubishi’s FQ tradition abroad, the automaker has developed a new model to fit in between the standard FQ-300 and the insanity known as the FQ-400. The Mitsubishi Evolution FQ-330 (almost) lives up to its namesake by delivering an additional 29 hp (up from the standard Evo’s 300 hp) and an additional 22 lb-ft. of torque for a total of 322. The sprint to 60 mph drops accordingly, with 0.3 seconds shaved from the standard cars 4.7-second time. The minimal powertrain changes consist of a reworked intake, high-flow down-pipe, exhaust and catalytic converter and a re-mapped ECU to make use of the breathing mods. As it’s name would suggest, the FQ-330 is equipped with Mitsubishi’s new six-speed Twin-Clutch Sports Shift Transmission (TC-SST), and the whole packages only commands a £3,000 premium over the standard Evo, at £35,999. Jump for all the details.

Production of Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X skipped for 2009 in U.S.

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Mitsubishi has put production of the Lancer Evolution X on hold, saying there’s enough inventory to make it through the end of the year when the 2010 model is released. Mitsubishi spokesperson Christine Jew told KickingTires that no changes were planned for the 2009 model, but the 2010 variant would benefit from a few minor revisions. Inventory tracking through Cars.com confirms that there are plenty of Evos available (887 2008 models, to be specific), but that doesn’t mean the new Evo X is a flop; sales of Mitsu’s rally rocket were up over 50% in 2008.

UPDATE: We spoke with Christine from Mitsubishi about Evo production, and it’s hardly a “halt.” The 2009 Evo will continue to be produced for Canada and Puerto Rico, so Mitsubishi is only skipping the U.S. market for the 2009 model year. As some of you pointed out, this is primarily due to the late launch the Evo received last year. The 2010 model will go on sale this summer and will feature some “minor,” undisclosed tweaks.

New ings N Spec kit for Evo has a deviated septum

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Japanese tuning house Ings has prepared a kit for the Lancer Evo X consisting of a front bumper and a Z-Power Wing. The bumper houses not only the odd-ified upper intake, it also wears new canards, brake ducts, and intercooler shrouds. The Ing site has little to say about the kit, but it looks to have been tuned on a race-tested car. If you’re keen, you can order the bumper here in either fiberglass or hybrid aero, a combination of urethane and fiberglass. It won’t be available for a few months, so you’ll have to be happy with the pics in the gallery below for now.
