AeroMotions downforce splitting rear spoiler in action

AeroMotions downforce splitting rear spoiler
The faster a car goes, the more downforce its various wings, spoilers and splitters can produce. There’s always a trade-off though, as the byproduct of downforce is more drag, which reduces a car’s top speed. Supercars like the Bugatti Veyron use active aerodynamics to produce the right amount of downforce for a specific situation like twisty road courses or high-speed runs, but cars like the Veyron are out of reach for most. Enter AeroMotions, a company that promises its rear wing assembly will provide the perfect amount of downforce at all times. The carbon fiber wing is split into two sections, each one moving independently of one another to offer just the right amount of traction. An on-board computer constantly monitors acceleration, braking and lateral acceleration so it can actively change the pitch of the wing’s sections in real-time as the car is being driven, effectively giving more or less downforce to whichever side of the car needs it most. AeroMotions’ wing is currently undergoing testing.

Mitsubishi “Racing Lancer” hits the sandbox

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

You’re looking at the replacement for Team Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart’s venerable rally version of the Pajero sport ute. The Japanese automaker’s rally team has just revealed its newest cross-country rally vehicle based on the Lancer, dubbed simply the “Racing Lancer”. The Racing Lancer will makes it debut at the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup in Portugal at the end of October. There it will show off its new turbo diesel engine, specifics of which have been withheld though the new mill has logged over 8,000 km during testing and limited competition. Mitsubishi’s new motor marks yet another instance of diesel power gaining prominence in motorsport just like Audi did in the American Le Mans Series with its oil-burning R8 and R10. And just like Audi, Mitsubishi’s decision to use a turbodiesel in the Racing Lancer is part of a larger plan that has but one objective: win the 2009 Dakar rally.

273 Mitsubishi Evos, one broken world record

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

At the Castle Combe Racing Circuit in Wiltshire England on Saturday July 12, the Mitsubishi Lancer Register (MLR) broke the world record for the biggest parade of Evos. This parade, however, unlike the normal confetti and floats affair, was a two-mile drive for all the attending Evo owners around the aforementioned racing circuit at a constant speed and in color-coordinated order. Laura Farmer of Guinness World Records was on hand and at 5:27 p.m. she officially confirmed that this parade of Evos was the largest in history.

Just one look at the pictures and it’s obvious that this parade was an impressive automotive spectacle. Not to mention a serious auditory experience considering all of the turbocharged four bangers with cannon-sized exhausts. Getting all 273 Evos ordered by color was probably no easy task either.

On top of setting a new world record, the event also raised over 7400 euros (about $11,785) for the Richard Burns Foundation. This foundation, named after the former World Rally champion who died at 34 of brain cancer, is dedicated to helping people with serious injury or illness. This looks like a job well done by MLR and hopefully this isn’t the last event organized by them.

Rumormill: Mitsubishi readying Lancer Sportback crossover

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Sources out of Japan suggest that Mitsubishi is considering offering a jacked-up version of the Lancer Sportback to international markets in 2010. The new model would come equipped with a higher ride height, a restyled fascia and protective body panels similar to those found on the old Subaru Outback and Audi Allroad.

Based off the current Lancer architecture, the compact crossover is almost guaranteed to be packing the Evolution IX’s all-wheel-drive system, and if Mitsubishi offers the 240hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter from the Ralliart, the Sportback X could be a serious contender in a market filled with bland and dynamically-challenged CUVs.
