Colin McRae tribute convoy reaches 30-miles long

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Oh, those Brits. When they’re not faking making corn circles they’re writing a rally legend’s name using 1,086 Subaru Imprezas as pixels. This, of course, was the finale to the weekend long celebration of Colin McRae’s life, which saw over 1,100 Scoobys converge on Prodrive’s test track in Warwickshire. Precisely how many cars took part in the ensuing 30-mile convoy is unknown, but if you don’t have anything better to do right now, you can have a go at counting them in the video after the jump (and look out for the near miss at 6:42). Even the local constabulary showed up in a WRX pursuit car.

The half-mile-long sign you see above broke the Guiness World Record for, err, writing signs with cars by a cool 800, but more importantly Colin’s fans raised over $80,000 for the McRae family’s chosen charities.

Sometimes it’s best to quit while you’re ahead

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Professionals earn pockets full of cheese usually because they do whatever it is they do better, faster, stronger than anyone else. Sometimes, though, they get the big bucks because they’ll do something again after having nearly killed themselves the first time. That is: they’ll get right back on the horse when a lot of non-professionals would instead grab a gin and tonic and watch reruns of I Love Lucy.

Jorge Lorenzo earned his money and a stay in hospital over the weekend during practice for the MotoGP China Grand Prix. On one run the bike bucked under him coming out of a turn, sending the 21-year-old rider up out of his seat like he was riding a bronco, but he managed to keep the bike upright and moving. On a following run he wasn’t so fortunate, highsiding, somersaulting, and suffering a fractured left ankle, a painful right ankle, a cut heel, a knee abrasion, and forearm compression.

But here’s where Lorenzo really impresses: he still got on the bike to qualify on Saturday, and came in fourth in Sunday’s race. Follow the jump to check out the videos of the bucking incident and the highside. And from now on, the word you’re looking for to describe Jorge Lorenzo: pro.

Stephane Ortelli’s wild ride at Monza

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Motorsport is a game of inches and tenths. A few inches here and a few tenths of a second there can mean the difference between spectacle and tragedy. Case in point: Team ORECA driver Stephane Ortelli’s horrifying crash during today’s Le Mans Series race at Monza. Ortelli, driving the ORECA Courage LC70-Judd, lost control of the car, which spun off the pavement and onto the grass. The prototype then became airborne, barely missing Allan McNish in the Audi R10 TDI. And then things got really ugly. The Courage touched back down and went into a series of cartwheels, shedding bodywork all over the place before crashing into the wall and landing right-side up. Ortelli suffered a broken ankle, but Team ORECA reports he is otherwise in good health. As you’ll see in the video, things could have been a whole lot worse. You know. A few inches here, a few tenths there…
We wish him a speedy recovery.
